Enisa Muratovic recalls the day her son’s pediatrician banged on a lead pipe in the examination room in a futile attempt to tell her that her son had elevated levels of lead in his blood. The Bosnian immigrant, who spoke limited English at the time, left not knowing what was wrong with her baby and what she should to do to help him. “I felt confused and afraid,” she says.

Communicating with health care providers is not just a problem for recent immigrants. This is a problem that impacts us all. It could be a family member, a friend or a co-worker.

It could it be you.

Help us by funding programs to improve health literacy in Missouri.

With your gift, we can –

  • Offer health literacy trainings to community organizations across the state
  • Host a training session at a rural clinic in the Bootheel
  • Provide a plain language review of health materials at a local free clinic
  • Help a community hospital assess their layout to ensure that patients can get around.
